Which museums in Copenhagen have an audio guide?

SMK, the National Museum of Denmark, Glyptoteket, Designmuseum Danmark, Rosenborg, Amalienborg, Christiansborg Palace, The David Collection, Thorvaldsens Museum, DAC, the Museum of Copenhagen, Bakkehuset and STORM all have audio you can listen to during the visit. Near Copenhagen, Louisiana has a mobile guide.

Is the audio guide free?

It depends on the museum. SMK, the National Museum, Designmuseum Danmark, Thorvaldsens Museum and The David Collection have free audio. The David Collection also has free admission. Rosenborg, Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palace cost 35 kr on top of the ticket. The Museum of Copenhagen QR trail is included in the ticket.

Do I need to download an app?

Not everywhere. SMK, Designmuseum Danmark, Rosenborg, Amalienborg, Christiansborg Palace, Thorvaldsens Museum and the Museum of Copenhagen use the browser or a QR code. The National Museum, Glyptoteket and the Frederiksberg Museums require an app. The David Collection has both an app and tablets on loan. DAC hands out a device in So Danish!.

Which languages are available?

Most of the guides are in Danish and English. Louisiana has German on the way. Check the language column before you buy tickets if your group speaks more than one language.

Do I need headphones?

Yes, if you listen on your own phone. SMK, Rosenborg, Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palace ask you to bring headphones. The David Collection lends tablets. DAC hands out a device in So Danish!. If you have no headphones, ask at the desk.

Does the Museum of Copenhagen have an audio guide?

Yes, but not for the whole museum. The museum has a QR audio walk with ten stops in the permanent exhibition on the first floor, in Danish and English, included in the ticket. The trail is part of Copenhagen Pride 2026. Scan the code on the signs.

Does the guide work without wi-fi?

Only if you have downloaded the content first. Rosenborg has no wi-fi in the Treasury, so you need to download before you go down. An app can run offline after download. A browser guide needs a network at least the first time you open the link.

Where can you listen as you walk?

Copenhagen has many museums. It is harder to work out which ones have something you can listen to during the visit, in which languages, and whether you need an app first.

How to read the list

Browser = scan a QR code or open a link. No trip to the App Store.
App = download from the App Store or Google Play, preferably before you go in.
Hardware = pick up a device at the desk, and hand it back.
Price = surcharge on top of the ticket, unless stated otherwise. Free means the audio does not cost extra.

SMK

The National Gallery of Denmark sits by Østre Anlæg. The audio guide runs on your own phone, is free and needs no app. Scan the QR code by the works that belong to a trail, or open the guide from the museum site. Each trail covers 5–15 works. Only works on display in the galleries are included. If a work goes out on loan, it disappears automatically.

The museum asks you to bring headphones. The guide is in Danish and English. SMK Link, the forthcoming browser guide, is planned for 2027. That is a different product. You can use the current guide now.

How to use the audio guide (SMK)

National Museum of Denmark

The Prince's Palace holds the history of Denmark across three floors. The audio guide is an app: search for “Nationalmuseet Audioguide” or “National Museum Audio Guide” in the App Store or Google Play. Ten stories about Denmark, told through objects from the Egtved Girl to Andreas Mogensen’s space suit. About one hour. The app is free.

It is ten trails, not the whole museum. Download from home before you go in.

Glyptoteket

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek sits by Dantes Plads. The museum points you to the Glyptoteket app in the App Store and Google Play when you want a closer look at the architecture — Dahlerup, Kampmann and Henning Larsen.

Designmuseum Danmark

Designmuseum Danmark is on Bredgade. Director’s Choice is 26 objects, narrated by museum director Anne-Louise Sommer. Scan QR codes in the foyer and in the galleries, or listen via links on the museum site. Each clip lasts 2–3 minutes. Free. Danish and English.

Some objects are marked as taken out of the exhibition. Check the catalogue on the page before you look for a piece that has been taken down.

Director’s Choice

Rosenborg

Rosenborg Castle in the King’s Garden runs the audio guide in the browser. No app. Danish and English. 35 kr on top of the ticket. About 50 minutes, from Christian IV to Frederick IV, ending in the Treasury. You get a link by email after purchase. Bring headphones and a phone.

There is no wi-fi in the Treasury. Download the content before you go down. Otherwise the sound stops where the crown jewels begin.

Amalienborg

The Amalienborg Museum is in Christian VIII’s Palace. Same model as Rosenborg: browser, no app, Danish and English, 35 kr, your own phone and headphones. On the first floor the guide covers the royal study rooms. On the second floor it continues in the state apartment. The guide can be bought with the ticket or separately.

The surcharge is easy to miss when you book admission. Add it to the basket if you want to listen.

Christiansborg Palace

The royal reception rooms and the Great Hall have an audio guide from The Royal Danish Collection. Browser, no app, Danish and English, 35 kr. The guide covers the halls where the royal family holds gala dinners, audiences and meetings of the Council of State, and it includes the tapestries. Bring a phone and headphones.

These are the palace’s reception rooms, not the Danish Parliament. Same 35 kr model as Rosenborg and Amalienborg.

The David Collection

The David Collection on Kronprinsessegade has free admission. The app is called The David Collection and holds texts on exhibitions, collections and objects in Danish and English. The Islamic collection is dimly lit. The museum recommends borrowing an info tablet at reception. It is free and has an audio guide to more than 100 Islamic works.

The tablet cannot be used outside the museum. You can download the app before the visit. Tablets are the reliable option if you want to listen in the low light.

Museum of Copenhagen

The Museum of Copenhagen on Stormgade has a QR audio walk with ten stops in the permanent exhibition on the first floor. Point the camera at the code for the language you want to hear. Danish and English. It is included in the ticket.

The trail is part of Copenhagen Pride 2026 and covers queer history in the city, not the whole museum.

Near Copenhagen

These four places make day trips from the centre. They are not on the main list.

Louisiana in Humlebæk has a mobile guide to the architecture and to several sculptures in the park, among them Moore, Calder and Heerup. The guide runs in the browser, in Danish and English, with German on the way. It does not cover the changing indoor exhibitions. Before your visit · History & architecture

ARKEN, Kronborg and Experimentarium do not have a comparable audio guide on their own websites.

How to choose

One hour and no appetite for an app: SMK, Designmuseum Danmark, Thorvaldsens Museum or the Museum of Copenhagen QR trail. Rosenborg, Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palace are also browser-based, but cost 35 kr extra.
