Which audio guide solution is right for your museum?

2. The museum app: A dedicated mobile app
Some larger museums have had their own app developed, which visitors download from the App Store or Google Play. The app can include maps, audio guides, images and extra material.
Advantages:
- Visitors use their own equipment
- Push notifications and marketing after the visit
- Data on how visitors use the exhibitions
- The option to download the content
Disadvantages:
- Development typically costs 150,000-250,000 kr. depending on complexity
- Must be maintained on both iOS and Android
- Costs annually to keep the app on the app store
- Visitors first have to find and download the app
- Many visitors delete the app after the visit
Actual cost: 150,000-250,000 kr. in development + maintenance and around 15,000 kr. for narration of the content.
3. QR code-based solution
Here you print a QR code at each exhibit. Visitors scan the code with their phone and get access to the audio file directly in the browser. No download needed.
Advantages:
- No download needed, it works at once
- Easy to update: just change the link behind the QR code
- Visitors already know a QR code
- Works on all smartphones
- Visitors use their own equipment and headphones
Disadvantages:
- Assumes visitors have smartphones with data or Wi-Fi
- Older visitors may find it complicated
- You need Wi-Fi or a good mobile signal throughout the museum
- Designing and implementing a good web interface still takes work
Actual cost: Depends on how the audio files are produced and hosted (see the next section).
4. AI-generated audio guides
The newest solution on the market. Instead of paying actors to narrate the text, you use AI voices to generate high-quality narration in every language you need. The audio files are typically delivered via QR codes or a web interface.
Advantages:
- Very inexpensive production compared with traditional narration
- You can have many languages for the same price as 2-3 with traditional narration
- Updates are fast: change the text, and AI generates a new soundtrack

Disadvantages:
- Even though AI voices have become good, some visitors can still hear a difference

What about quality? Can AI really replace real actors?
It is a fair question that many museums ask.
Two years ago the answer was no. AI voices sounded robotic and lifeless. But the technology has taken a quantum leap. Modern TTS systems (text-to-speech) such as ours can deliver voices that are almost impossible to tell apart from real people.
